Flood damage stands at Rs. 50 billion

The government today said that the initial estimated damage from the flood stands at US $ 500 million (approximately 50 billion rupees).
This was disclosed during a meeting between External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, and the Heads of Mission of the Member States of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) based in Colombo at the Ministry to discuss relief measures for persons affected by floods in Sri Lanka.

Mrs. Marina Mohamed, Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management, making a presentation on the emergency situation, stated that the initial estimated damage from the flood stands at US $ 500 million.

The government has spent US $ 10 million to provide cooked meals and dry rations for people in all affected areas. The Ministry of Disaster Management has released US $ 1.5 million for relief during the three days ending 12 January, it added.
