A temporary building of the Norolchcholai Muslim Maha Vidyalaya was gutted early today. The fire brigade of the Norochcholai coal power plant rushed to the scene and doused the fire and prevented it spreading to other buildings.

The school’s principal Mr. Rahuman had told police that the damage caused was initially estimated to be around Rs. one million.

It is alleged that a fire cracker from a vehicle which was making its rounds announcing the sighting of the new moon had fallen on the cadjan roof of the building and sparked off the fire. It is reported that 97 students study in the building. (Tex by Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe, Pix by Padmakumari)
