Speaking on the decision to support the government to overcome the immediate aftermath of “what is now certain - a US resolution,” UNP Vice President Lakshman Kiriella said the country is faced with a grave situation ‘similar to that of Sudan’ and therefore the UNP is concerned about the future of the country.

“We are not supporting the government but are focused on ensuring that our country does not face a similar fate to that of Sudan. The government has suppressed the local media and is not showing the real picture. If the government does not keep to its side of the bargain Sri Lanka faces the danger of having a referendum being conducted in the North and East just like in Sudan” he said.

Mr. Kiriella said, the draft resolution to be taken for vote on March 22, contains each aspect that the government of Sri Lanka had continuously assured the international community.

“The government has not kept to any of its international commitments. Even after the assurances given, that the LLRC recommendations would be implemented, nothing has been implemented” he said.

He said more countries would vote against Sri Lanka due to the actions of the government.

“It is certain that more countries would vote against us, and this government has allowed our country to suffer humiliation at the hands of the international community, which is a first in the post independent history of this country. We are concerned about our beloved country and hence the decision to work on an MoU with the government” he said. (Hafeel Farisz)
