Two faculties of the Wayamba University were closed today following a clash between several students of the Applied science and Business and Finance faculties, the Registrar of the Wayamba University Gamini Ekanayake told Daily Mirror online.

Mr.Ekanayake added that the two faculties were closed until further notice as there was an atmosphere where further clashes involving students would occur following the clash yesterday.

The police are providing the necessary protection to the university students and escorting them to the bus stops for their safety. The two faculties would be opened soon, he said.

Meanwhile the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) claimed that the closure of the two facilities had hindered several exams currently underway and that they urge the University authorities to reopen the faculties soon.

In a statement the IUSF claims because the clash was due to a personal dispute it was unfair to close the two faculties which affected majority of students and that a letter had been already sent to the university authorities urging them to reopen the two faculties.

It further warned that if immediate action was not taken by the relevant authorities’ steps would be taken to protect the rights of the university students. (Daily Mirror online)
