Video: Expel Hakeem, calls BBS

The Bodhu Bala Sena (BBS) today urged the government to expel Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem from the government over the recent statements he had made against what he called “Buddhist extremism and the need to control it.”

“We are ashamed of the President and government because Hakeem had condemned the Buddhists and the monks who brought the President into power,” BBS Secretary General Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera said at a media briefing this morning.

“If I am the leader I would have fired him,” he said.

The BBS called recent statements made by Minister Hakeeem were dangerous and noted them as an insult to Buddhists in the country.

His predecessor wanted to unite the Muslims though he had sentiments of nationalism at the beginning, he said.

“We do not know why he was making such baseless statements. Was it us who attacked the people who were going home after attending the rally in Aluthgama,” he questioned.

“If the government has fear and shame within itself, then expel him. We know that he won’t stay in the government for long,” he noted.

The BBS Secretary General said that Hakeem was never a part of the government in 2005 or in 2010 as he never supported the government at elections.  (Supun Dias and Sanath Desmond)
