The European Union (EU), while welcoming the fact that the General Elections in Sri Lanka took place in a largely calm atmosphere, noted that there were reports of incidents on election day and trusts that the authorities will take appropriate action to ensure that these are properly investigated and resolved.

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, in a statement congratulated President Rajapaksa and the UPFA on their success and added that the EU looks forward to working with the newly elected Sri Lankan government in the implementation of its ambitious political agenda including national reconciliation.

“I also welcome the fact that these elections took place in a largely calm atmosphere. The EU has noted reports of incidents on election day and trusts that the authorities will take appropriate action to ensure that these are properly investigated and resolved,” She said. (Daily Mirror online)
