26 May 2015 03:00 pm

Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva today urged all the political parties to support and show their commitment to enact the 20th Amendment to the Constitution which was to be approved by the Cabinet.

Mr. de Silva said all the political parties including UNP, JVP and TNA should support to enact the 20th Amendment to the Constitution after being approved by the Cabinet and included in the Parliament agenda and added that it should be sent to the Supreme Court for its opinion and make necessary amendments if needed without any delay.

He said that he requested President Maithripala Sirisena and the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to provide an opportunity to approve the Draft Bill of the 20th Amendment in the cabinet meeting this Wednesday.

Mr. de Silva said the Opposition led by the UPFA had made a major contribution to draft a Bill to introduce a new electoral system by removing the preferential voting system and elect a representative responsible for each electorate.

He said it was a victory for all the political parties that sought good governance to have enacted the 19th Amendment to the Constitution with the support of a majority in Parliament.

Mr. de Silva said the enactment of the 20th Amendment could not be delayed as it was clearly mentioned in the manifesto of President Maithripala Sirisena. (Ajith Siriwardana)
