Emergency laws, now in operation in Sri Lanka, will be lifted shortly.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will make a statement in Parliament on the lifting of emergency during the forenoon session on Thursday, highly placed sources said. Emergency laws were being extended on a monthly basis ever since these were imposed, about three decades ago.

The lifting of the provisions of the emergency regulations marks a key decision of the government, aimed at bringing normalcy back to the country, after the end of the 30-year civil war. (The Hindu)
