Eleven remanded on charges of prostitution

Eleven suspects including nine women from remote areas of the country were arrested and produced in Court by the police, on charges of having run a brothel under the guise of a massage parlour at Galle road, Kollupitiya.

Accordingly, the eleven suspects were ordered be remanded till March 14 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate today.

Filing a report in Court, the Kollupitiya police informed that the women who come from Moneragala, Lunugala, Badulla, Anuradhapura and Baduraliya areas were among those arrested.

Meanwhile, two men who were alleged to have managed the brothel were also arrested on charges of procuring women for prostitution. Police submitted in Court that they carried out a raid after asserting that a brothel was being operated under the guise of a massage clinic at Galle road in Kollupitiya. The nine female suspects were arrested on charges of having aided and abetted the illegitimate operation.

According to the police, a police officer who posed off as a customer had been made to pay Rs.4000 in order to set a woman. 
Meanwhile, the Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne ordered the prison authorities to produce the nine women before a venereal diseases clinic and ordered the eleven suspects to be remanded till March 13. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
