Election results do not reflect people’s will

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today the results of Saturday’s local council elections did not reflect the people’s will in a manner that was free and fair.

It said election laws were blatantly violated with reports of a number of incidents of violence, intimidation and the abuse of public resources.

“Opposition candidates were subjected to threats especially in the North where the security forces were used in the campaigning,” the JVP said adding that the government was rejected in the North even after a massive use of force.

It said it was interesting to find out why the government was so badly defeated in the North and warned that the people would be again burdened like what happened after the March 17 elections.

“People will be the ultimate losers in this situation,” the JVP said.

JVP thanked all those who voted for the party at this election despite obstructions and other undemocratic acts carried out by the government.
