Education for fishermen

The Sri Lankan and Indian Navies are to conduct extensive educational programmes for their local fisherman, Navy Spokesperson Captain Athula Senerath told the Daily Mirror, today. “We intend on carrying out extensive educational programmes, because many of these fishermen are ignorant of the boundaries and are looking for an easy catch,” he said.

This matter was discussed at a meeting between the two forces onboard an Indian Naval Ship, yesterday.

Further, matters of security on the Palk Strait, including surveillance and patrolling carried out by the respective forces were analyzed.  “We discussed means of improving security by way of bringing to an end the illegal activities of drug trafficking and human smuggling through improved surveillance methods,” he said.

The meeting held onboard the INF Kaurai North of the Sri Lankan International Maritime boundary line was attended by Representatives of the Navy Headquarters and the East, North and North-Central Naval Commands. These meetings are to be held bi-annually.  (D.S)
