Drunk drivers beware this season: Police

The police warned drivers not to drive after consuming alcohol during the Christmas and New Year season. If found they will be dealt severely by the traffic police.

These steps are taken as the number of road accidents have increased significantly due to speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that they will take more action against such traffic offenders. “Eight to 10 accidents take place daily in Sri Lanka due to these reasons,” he said.

Drivers are now more concerned with their driving habits following the strict enforcement of traffic laws with the sole intention of reducing the number of road accidents and maintaining disciplined driving habits among motorists and riders, he said.

The police also said that they will be making round-the-clock detections and will have surprise traffic operations to track traffic offenders on a daily basis.

SP Rohana said that the public will also have to park their cars in car parks while engaging in shopping for the season. “Their cars will be towed to nearby police stations if not,” he said. (Supun Dias)
