The Democratic People’s Front (DPF) and a former UNP ally today slammed UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasingha and a few other party members alleging they were behind the decision not to give former MP Mano Ganesan a national list slot in parliament.

President Mahinda Rajapakse, expressing his concern over the failure to elect Mano Ganesan to parliament, telephoned him on Friday morning and said he was shocked that Ganesan had not been given a seat in parliament. Likewise, MP’s such as Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Vijitha Herath, CWC Leader Arumugan Thondaman and SLFP (M) Leader Mangala Samaraweera have also telephoned Ganesan to express dismay on his omission from the national list.

The DPF says that that the decision to not give Mano Ganesan a seat in Parliament was the ‘dirty work’ of the ‘Gang of 5’ of the UNP consisting of UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, Karu Jayasooriya, Tissa Attanayake, Ravi Karunayake and Malik Samarawickrama.

“This Gang of 5 is ruining this grand old party by throwing away it’s own loyal members and steadfast minority allies. Even Rosy Senanayake MP who carries lot of respect from the Catholics and among the women and Mr. Muzambil, Western Provincial Councilor and prime Muslim leader in UNP’s Colombo balamandalaya are affected by this Gang-of-5,” DPF National Organiser and Colombo District Parliamentarian Praba Ganesan alleged.

The party further held Ranil Wickramasinghe responsible for the blunders and failures of the UNP and warned that Wickramasingha will have to ‘pay heavily’ for not electing Mano Ganesan to parliament especially since Ganesan was the Vice President of the UNF alliance.

“Ranil Wickramasingha has given into bad advice of his gang members. But he cannot escape. As the Leader, history will hold him responsible for all the blunders under him. He has by his own act, due to bad advice, distanced himself from the Tamil people by blocking Mano Ganesan in the 7th parliament. He will pay the political price for this. We will never allow any more Tamil votes going to the UNP as long as this Gang commands the UNP,” Prabha Ganesan warned.

The party further warned of stepping on to the streets of Colombo against Wickramasingha’s decision.

“We will get on to the Colombo streets. We are democratic fighters. This Gang will soon realize that they have touched the wrong end of the live wire. They will learn their mistake soon in Colombo’s North, Central, East, West and Borella and Dehiwela electorates. We will then spread it to all parts of the country where Tamils live. It is only the beginning of end of the Gang,” Ganesan warned. (Daily Mirror online)
