Don’t make acting principals permanent-UNP

The UNP urged the government in Parliament today not to absorb those acting principals who are on a fast, into permanent since most of them were political henchmen.

Making remarks during the debate on the vote of the Education Ministry, UNP MP Akhila Viraj Kariyawasam said that his party had learnt about attempts by the government to make these acting principals permanent due to political reasons.

“There are qualified teachers serving at schools. The government is trying to sideline them. We ask the government not to make them permanent merely considering their political affiliations,” he said.

Referring to other issues in the education sector, he said that the language use in some school textbooks was too advanced for students to understand. He said that some academics had prepared these textbooks merely to show off their knowledge, but not to help students to learn the subjects.

Mr. Kariyawasam said that the entire education sector had been politicized. “In the north central province, eight zonal education directors have not been appointed due to political reasons,” he said. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
