Around 12 dogs have been removed from the BMICH premises and taken to the dog pound to avoid possible disturbances during the ongoing 58th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference at the BMICH, CEO of the Blue Paw Trust Dr. Nalinika Obeysekere said.

The Blue Paw Trust, an organisation that promotes animal welfare claims the initial arrangement was for these dogs to be returned to the BMICH, once the conference concluded, as they have been occupying the premises for a while now.

However, the Daily Mirror learnt through an official at the S.W.R.D Bandaranaike Memorial Foundation that there was a rumour that the dogs were not going to be brought back. “These dogs have been vaccinated, sterilised and well taken care of by the Blue Paw Trust. We manage the population of dogs in public areas and ensure they are not a form of disturbance to neighbouring people,” explained Dr. Obeysekere.

According to Coordinator of the Dog Managed Zone at Blue Paw Trust Dr. D. Subasinghe, the Blue Paw Trust has signed an MoU with the BMICH to take care of the dogs at the premises. (SK)
