Government Medical Officer’s Association (GMOA) said, doctors were ready to face any inquiry on their negligence in providing medical services.

Dr. Nalinda Herath said the health ministry followed a specific procedure when dealing with instances of doctors’ negligence and said they would not interfere into such inquiries.

“Not all patients who fight for their lives could be saved. But if a patient’s life is at stake due to the carelessness of the doctors, the health ministry inquires into such cases and we will not hinder inquiries conducted by the ministry,” Dr. Herath said.

When asked whether it was reasonable for the doctors to resort to a strike action on grounds that a doctor was threatened, Dr. Herath said they could not take this lightly in a situation where two doctors had been killed in the country and said that the doctors security should be taken into consideration.

Responding to a question, Dr. Herath said they hadn’t lodged any form of complaint against the persons who threatened the doctors, but the residents were going to complain against them as their actions had led to closure of the Badureliya hospital for six days

“People have the right to take legal action against negligence and malpractices of doctors, but have no right to threaten doctors personally,” he said.

Dr. Herath also said they had to resort to the strike action because this was a country where unnatural incidents happen, which challenged the security of their members. (Naduni Jayasinghe, Ajith Siriwardana)
