DM wins journo awards

Daily Mirror newspaper was among the winners at the Sri Lanka journalism awards held late this evening at the Mount Lavinia Hotel bagging two awards and two merit awards.

 

Sports Editor of Daily Mirror Channaka de Silva won the Sports Journalist of the Year award while Samantha Perera won the Photo Journalist of the Year.

 

Dianne Silva won the Denzil Pieris Young Reporter of the Year merit award.

One of the D.R Wijewardene merit awards for earning the appreciation of the peers was picked up by Daily Mirror Deputy Editor and Defence correspondent Sunil Jayasiri.

 

Meanwhile Cheranka Mendis of our sister paper Daily FT won the award the Business Journalist of the Year.


The winners are:


The Denzil Peiris Young Reporter of the Year award went to Sureka Sanjeewani Samarsena of Ravaya and a merit awards to Nadia Fuzulhaq of Sunday Times and Dianne Silva of Daily Mirror.


The K Kailasapathy for Reporting Under Special Circumstances the Sunday Leader newspaper and the merit award to Mihiri Fonseka of Lakbima and Arun Arokianakhan of Daily Veerakesiri. 


Cartoonist of the Year went to Suppiah Jeyatalan of Veerakesiri and merit to Wasantha Siriwardena of The Nation and J.M.K De Silva of the Island. 


Photojournalist of the Year award went to Samantha Perera of Daily Mirror while the merit award went to Sanka Vidanagame of the Sunday Times


Best Designed Newspaper of the year award goes to Sunday Lakbima Merit goes to The Nation and Metro News. 


Sports Journalist of the Year merit awards went to Mohamed Amit of The Nation and Phamtaran Ravivarma of Metro News. 


The B.A Siriwardhane Columnist of the Year Sinhala award went to Amarasiri Wickremaratne of Lanka Paper and merit to Sujeewa Weeraratne of the Raavaya. 


Tamil Columnist of the Year was awarded to Ayakkannu Titokugan of Thinakural merit A. H.Siddeque Kariyapper Virakesari Weekly. 


English Columnist of the Year went to Chandini Kirinde of Sunday Times and merit award to Emil Hals Van Der Ooorten of the Sunday Leader.


Environmental Reporter of the Year award was given to Karunaratne Gamage of the Sunday Divaina and merit to K. Jayanthaof Thinakural Newspaper and merit Isham Nizam of The Island. 


Business and Finance Journalist of the Year award (Sinhala) was given to Nuwan Ganewatte of Divainna and Sunday Divainna, (Tamil) TO Yogaraja Nimal Raj of Thinakural. The merit award was given to Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema of The Sunday Leader. 


The Subramanium Chettiah award for reporting for Social Responsibility went to Hussein Fathima Huzna of Thinakural and merit awards merit went to Ratha Ekanayake of the Divaina and C.P Dissanayake of Sunday Times. 


The Upali Wijewardena Feature Writer of the Year (Sinhala) was awarded to Udani Wijesundara of the Sunday Lakbima, merit to Sanjeewika Samaratunga of Sunday Lankadeepa, (Tamil) to Balasubramanium Kirubaran of Thinakural and merit to Hasanthi Rajakrishna of the Veerakesiri Daily, (English) to Ranee Mohamed of The Sunday Leader and merit to Randima Attigala of The Nation. 


Investigative Journalist of the Year went to Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema and merit to
R. S Wijewardena of The Sunday Leader.

The Scoop of the Year was awarded to the Sunday Times news desk.
 
The award for Defending the Freedom of the Press went to Upali Tenakoone, J.S Tissanayagam, Podala Jayantha and N. Withyatharam and slain Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunge.

The D.R Wijewardene award for earning the appreciation of the peers was given to Sunday Times Defence Correspondent Iqbal Athas while the merit awards were given to Sunil Jayasiri of Daily Mirror, D.S Balasuriya of Sunday Lankadeepa, Chamindra Ferdinando of The Island, Mihiri Fonseka of Lakbima, Prasanna Fonseka of Sihatha, Prasanna Jayasooriya of Daily Lankadeepa, Ranga Jayasuriya of Lakbima, Sirimevan Kasthuriarchchi of Daily Divainna, T. R Perera of Rivira, R. Warallegama of Daily Lakbima and Ranil Wijepala of Daily News.

The Mervin de Silva Journalist of the Year went to Namani N Wijedasa of Lakbima News.
