Discussions to release fishermen

The Ministry of External Affairs has informed the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kenya to begin discussions with Somali Authorities in order to secure the release of Lankan fishermen onboard the fishing vessel Ocean 4, according to the Public Communications Department of the Ministry.

The Sri Lankan multi-day fishing vessel had five crewmen on board when it was reportedly captured by Somali pirates.

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry stated earlier that the vessel was now being held by the pirates.

The vessel had left from Beruwala on January 22. The crew members identified are; Chandra Pushpakumara Ranaweera, 53, Suhada Pushpakumara, 30, K L C Samantha, 36, Sarath Ranjith Perera and Lakshama Perera. (DS)
