The UNP is expected to hold a disciplinary inquiry on Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekera who unsuccessfully contested for the party’s national organiser’s post, sources said.

Party sources said the inquiry is to be conducted on the public statement made by Mr. Jayasekera after the secret ballot which was held to elect the office bearers of the party on December 19.

Mr. Jayasekera was reported saying that there were armed men inside the party headquarters, Sirikotha, on the day of voting.

He however publicly condemned the violence that took place at the party headquarters following the election.

It is reported that a disciplinary inquiry is expected as many in the party had lodged complaints with the General Secretary of the party, Tissa Attanayake.

According to some members of the party the final decision on the inquiry had to be made by the working committee.

Mr. Jayasekera was defeated by a majority of 20 votes at the secret ballot by opposition leader of the Eastern Provincial Council Daya Gamage who polled 56 votes. Mr. Jayaskera polled 36 votes. (Yohan Perera)
