A team of police personnel led by senior DIG Gamini Navaratne is conducting a special probe to check whether the police neglected their duties when the peace march organised by UNP reformists was attacked in Matara.

The probe was initiated after the reformists pointed fingers at the police for not performing their duties at the time of the attack.

Acting police spokesman Ajith Rohana said 24 people were remanded till October 14.

He said provincial councillor Maithree Gunaratne’s 71-year-old father Herman Gunaratne is receiving treatment at the Matara Hospital under security provided by prison guards. (Sanath Desmond)
