While the UNP is gearing to make some vital decisions on the party reforms at the next working committee meeting scheduled for Thursday the party’s Hambantota district MP Sajith Premadasa who had lobbied for reforms said the party should give priority to the local government elections

UNP Galle District MP and Party Spokesman Gayantha Karunatillke told a news conference today that the party would make some vital decisions on the party reforms at the working committee meeting.

Responding to a question raised by the journalists as to comments made by some pro reform members that the reform process of the party should be delayed till the local government elections are over, Mr. Karunatilleke said there were different ideas on it among the party members but everything could be sorted out successfully at the working committee meeting.

‘Some are requesting that the reforms should be delayed till the election is over while others say it should be done before but a definite decision will be made on Thursday,” he said assuring that a collective decision would be made on the matter.

Commenting on the matter, Mr. Premadasa told Daily Mirror that he had not made a request to postpone the reforms but had only said that priority to the local government elections as it is an election which is faced by the party’s local government members who had pioneered the lobbying for reforms. “ I have only made this point as I am not the party leader to request the working committee to postpone the reforms,” he said.

Mr. Premadasa added the entire party machinery should be behind the party candidates at this election.  (Yohan Perera)
