Customs seizes undeclared container

The Customs Revenue Task Force (RTF) opened an unclaimed 40 foot container suspected to have been imported by businessman Shyam who was abducted and killed in May, the Customs said.

According to the RTF the container had been at the Colombo Port for nearly two months and immediate steps were taken to open the container.

The container had arrived at the Colombo Port from India on May 29 and the Customs said that there were discrepancies between the details stated by the agent and the goods found in the container.

One person take into custody by the Customs giving a statement had said that the container was imported from India from money invested by Shyam.

However it was also found out that instead of importing the straps used for slippers, they had imported uppers for shoes.

According to the RTF the tax loss is yet to be established as well as the value of the seized items.

The container was sent to a scan to see whether the details given by the ship agent matches the details given to the Customs by the importers. (Supun Dias)
