Crack in Batti

20 March 2011 01:52 pm

People in Batticloa were alarmed with the cracks that appeared on the earth near the station on Saturday. It was reported that water seeped out of the cracks.

The Disaster Management center (DMC) said it may be due to the increase of water level below the surface. A spokesman from the DMC said the content of water below the surface can be increased because of the impact of the full moon. This, the DMC said is a usual phenomenon on a full moon day.

The DMC had requested the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau to  carry out an investigation on the situation.

The Geological Survey and Minds Bureau Chairman Dr. N. P. Wijayananda said a geologist would be sent today to the site to carry out an investigation. However he assured that it is unlikely to be anything serious.

He said an investigation would be carried out anyhow as people have got more alarmed after the devastating earth quake in Japan which also triggered a tsunami. (Yohan Perera)
