Corrupt candidates on Govt. list; JVP

The ruling UPFA had approved nominations to many corrupt local government members despite its policy announcement that it would not entertain them at this election, the JVP charged today.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath told a news conference that these members, charged with corruption and financial frauds, had been given nomination in the areas including Mahara and Katunayake-Seeduwa.

“There are many   corrupt members on the UPFA’s nomination lists. The government promised the people that these fraudsters would not be entertained this time. However, the government has accommodated them on board again,” he said.

He said that the government asked for a mandate from the people at the last general election to develop the country first and then the village.

“The same slogan had been reversed this time by the government asking for a fresh mandate to develop the village first,” Mr. Herath said.

“The government deceived the general public and public servants at previous elections. They pledged to recruit graduates as Jana Sabha Secretaries. Public servants were promised a monthly salary increase Rs. 2500. Not only that, they also hoodwinked their own members by appointing some as senior ministers.  Now, they seek a fresh mandate to correct   mistakes in the local government administration. Anyway, they had ample time and political power to do it much earlier. They have proven themselves to be failures. Do they now have a moral right to ask for a fresh mandate to correct the situation? ,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)
