Several substances deemed unsuitable for human consumption such as grease and oil were found inside mineral water bottles sold in Pettah following a raid carried out by the Consumer Affairs Authority, CAA Chairman Rumy Marzook said today.

Mr. Marzook said that they had raided about 200 shops in Pettah yesterday (4) and found mineral water bottles that contained suspicious looking substances which were confiscated and handed over to the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI). “The investigations revealed that substances such as grease and oil which were unfit for human consumption were present in the samples taken from the offending mineral water bottles,” he said.

He said that they were now trying to ascertain exactly how these substances got in to these bottles as the bottled water had even been given the Sri Lanka Standards certification and had been approved by the Health Ministry.

Mr. Marzook added that the Authority had also taken steps to conduct raids on institutions suspected of selling consumer goods at prices exceeding the standard price range, without expiry dates printed on them and for selling goods without displaying their prices. (Chaturanga Pradeep-DM Online)
