The Colombo Fort Magistrate today turned down a police request to direct the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to arrest Nirosha Wimalaratne also known as ‘the cobra girl’ when she returns to the country.

Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya had on April 4, issued a warrant for Ms. Wimalaratne’s arrest for not being present in Court to answer charges in the case where she is alleged to have had a cobra in her room at a Kollupitiya nightclub.

The Kollupitiya police informed Court that the suspect had violated Court orders by leaving the country and that they were unable to locate her permanent address.
They said there was nothing known about her sureties either and as such asked Court to direct the Controller of the Immigration and Emigration to arrest her on arrival at the airport.

The Magistrate said he would only allow a copy of the warrant to be submitted to the Airport Police OIC for the police to arrest the suspect at the airport. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
