The Coast Conservation Department (CCD) warned that the impact of coastal erosion could be comparatively higher this year since the monsoon conditions affected the country earlier than expected

CCD Acting Director General Mr. Anil Premaratne told Daily Mirror Online that coastal erosion has increased due to the rough seas that have been triggered through monsoon conditions as well as the unpredictable weather patterns. “Costal erosion condition impacts Sri Lanka annually during monsoon periods. However, this year the impact is higher as the monsoon conditions which usually affects during mid-May. arrived earlier this year,” he said.

Mr. Premaratne stated that areas which are most prone to costal erosion include Uswatakeiyyawa, Moratuwa – Lunawa, Wedikanda – Rathmalana, Marawila and added that the Mahaoya river mouth in Negombo is also at risk. “We have mobilized emergency resources and taken immediate measures to minimize the impacts of coastal erosion,” he added.
