CMC meets today: UPFA councillors divided

The opposition United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) group in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) appear to be divided with few members including former deputy mayor Asath Sally who crossed over from the UNP opposing the decisions taken at the UPFA councillors meeting on October 31, informed sources said yesterday.

Today’s inaugural session of the newly elected CMC is expected to be a stormy one with the UPFA attempting to take control of 16 standing committees including the finance committee

The move is spearheaded by chief opposition whip M.H. Manzil with opposition spokesman Riza Zarook canvassing strongly for it while some others including Mr. Sally opposed to such a move.

Mr. Sally’s camp is also reportedly opposed to the appointment of former parliamentarian R.A.D. Sirisena to head CMC opposition leader Milinda Moragoda’s staff.

This had been decided at the UPFA councillors meeting on October 31.

It had also been decided that no UPFA member should oppose any decisions taken by the group.

The Daily Mirror learns that Mr. Sally would back Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil on proposals which he could agree to. (Yohan Perera)
