Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan has urged the army and police to investigate the incident where a Batticaloa Municipal Councilor was reported missing and allegedly abducted.

The family of a Batticaloa Municipal Councilor at a meeting with the Eastern Province Chief Minister last evening, had raised suspicion over who is involved in his alleged abduction.

At the meeting with Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, the family of Pragasam Sahayamany, who was allegedly abducted on Monday, said that they had strong suspicions that the “authorities” maybe involved in the abduction, TMVP Spokesperson Azath Maulana told Daily Mirror online.

The Chief Minister, after hearing the family’s complaint had today contacted the army and the Eastern Province Police DIG and sought a speedy investigation to find the missing Municipal Councilor, Maulana added.

“The police have assured us that investigations into the kidnapping have already begun. We are suspicious as to who may be involved as the political parties in the east are not armed anymore. With the end of the war and peace prevailing in the east, only the police will be able to give us some answers as to who is responsible for the abduction,” Maulana said.

The TMVP General Secretary Edwin Silva Kaileshwararajah in a statement yesterday said that they would launch a mass agitation campaign in Batticaloa if the Municipal Council Member was not released by Saturday. (Daily Mirror online)
