The main opposition United National Party (UNP) today charged that its official news website ‘Lankawaynews’ had been banned at the time it was being checked out.

UNP parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera told a news conference this web site was among several others that had been recently banned by the government.

He said his party has been forced to call off its official launch scheduled for November 27.

Mr. Samaraweera said the UNP intended to take legal action against this move by the government.
He charged that banning of web sites was a clear sign of Sri Lanka becoming a mafia-type government similar to the one which was in Libya and what is presently in Zimbabwe.

“At the start were a stock market mafia and then a land mafia and by banning websites the government is preventing people from becoming aware of these dangerous moves,” he said.

Mr. Samaraweera said this unfortunate situation was highlighted by prominent Buddhist monks and other religious leaders.

He said the UNP was planning to make next year a year of protests over these mafias and added that the protests would be held in every constituency (Yohan Perera)
