The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) recorded a statement from former army commander and Democratic Party leader Sarath Fonseka last evening, regarding the attempt on his life by a suicide bomber that took place inside the army headquarters in 2006 -- more than seven years after the incident.

Two detectives had visited Mr. Fonseka’s office at around 2.55 pm and spent close on four hours with him. During this time Mr. Fonseka had asked them about the timing of their visit.

“Why did it take them seven years to record my statement about the incident? I told them that I had suspicions about the timing of this," said Mr. Fonseka, speaking to Daily Mirror.

Speaking further he said that he had told the detectives that he believed there was a bigger conspiracy behind the attempt on his life.

“I told them that I didn't think this was the work of a few junior cadres and handlers; there was a bigger conspiracy than that," he said.

A female LTTE cadre made an attempt on Gen. Fonseka's life on April 25, 2006.  11people were killed and 27 wounded in the attack. (Hafeel Farisz)
