Lankan citizens

Eighty Sri Lankans of Chinese origin who have been living in Sri Lanka over a period of time have been given Sri Lankan citizenship so far, the Department of Immigration and Emigration, registering persons of Indian origin said.

The Deputy controller of the department, W.A.D.U.V Nissanka said the citizenship is been given according to a special act approved in 2008 and the time period for issuing the document will expire in 2013.

It is reported that the first Chinese people had arrived in Sri Lanka even before Sri Lanka was declared as an independent country 1948. (Daily Mirror online)
