The government is responsible for making Sri Lanka the country where the most number of child rape cases are reported, the joint opposition alliance led by the UNP said.

NP MP Mangala Samaraweera told a news conference of the joint opposition that it was the government which was responsible for the 700 child rape cases that had took place during the past six months.

“The government had therefore had made Sri Lanka the wonder in Asia according to the pledge it gave during the elections,” Mr. Samaraweera said.
He said child rape cases that had become a daily occurrence today had made the parents stay in tension till their children returned from school or tuition classes.  Mr. Samaraweera said it was the ruling party politicians who were behind most of these crimes.

He therefore said an MP from Colombo district who had been charged with molesting a minor had been assigned to monitor the Defence Ministry.  “This is the fate of the country today,” he said. The UNP MP said anyone charged with child abuse or drugs are able to escape today if they are associates of ministers and other government officials.(Yohan Perera)
