Police warned the public today to check their land deeds after it was revealed that the CID arrested a man who cheated a lady engineer of Rs.42 million by selling a plot of land using forged documents.

The man was arrested on a complaint made by her realisingthat the land was owned by the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

She purchased the one-acre block of land close to SLIIT inMalabeto set up a solar power project.

The lady engineer had faced several problems with the project and had decided to sell the block of land. It was then that she had been cheated by the ‘seller’.

Police spokesman AjithRohana said the CID recovered 56 original land deeds which were removed from filesafter inserting fake documents at the Land Registry offices in Colombo and the suburbs.

“We request the public to check their land deeds and inform the police if found missing,” he added. (Supun Dias)
