A prospective groom who has collected more than one million rupees from a teacher stating the money was necessary to prepare visas to move to the US after marriage has been taken into custody by the police.
The suspect who had answered a marriage proposal advertisement in a local paper had shown interest in the victim and had convinced her that the money was necessary to go abroad after marriage.
The teacher had then handed over the money to the suspect in a bank and the transaction was recorded on the bank’s security cameras.
The suspect had thereafter requested another six lakhs as well as her car. After growing suspicious when the car was not returned, the victim had informed her brother who was overseas.
The brother of the victim had then returned to Sri Lanka and found out details of the fraudulent suspect and then notified the Fraud Investigation Bureau. After investigations were carried out, the suspect, who is a father of three, was taken into custody in Marawila.
It is reported when questioned regarding the fraudulent activities of the suspect, he had reportedly told the arresting officer that this was his profession. The suspect is a fraudster in Marawila and known by his alias “Pacha Gune” in the area. Further investigations are being carried out by the Unit six of the Fraud Bureau. (Daily Mirror online)
