CCD to frame charges against SF

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) will frame charges against General Sarath Fonseka, Dhanuna Tilekaratne’s mother and several others on the advice of the AG’s Department under the Exchange Control Act in the next fortnight, a senior AG’s Department source said.

This follows the detection of US$ 527,000, Sterling Pound 100 and Rs.15 million concealed in four safety deposit boxes maintained by Mrs. Tilakaratne, in a private bank by the CCD on February 15.

Mrs. Tilakaratne was quoted as saying that the cash had been deposited in the safe locker of the private bank from General Fonseka’s election office at Rajakeeya Mawatha.

The source told Daily Mirror on conditions of anonymity that a final decision on the indictment against Genera Fonseka, Mrs. Tilakaratne and a few others will be taken once Attorney General Mohan Peiris returns back to the island from an official engagement overseas.

“We have gone through the dossier sent by the CCD and there is sufficient material to frame charges against them. The police will indict the suspects directly in the High Court of Colombo as a magisterial inquiry is not required when dealing with the offences committed under the provisions of the Exchange Control Act,” the source said.  (SAJ)
