Can’t say from where the oil is leaking

The Marine Environmental Protection Authority said yesterday that it is hard to detect the exact spot, from which fuel is leaking out of the Cyprus-flagged vessel mv Thermopylae Sierra.

The vessel which was anchored in the sea some 20 kilometres off Panadura for about three years, over a legal dispute, sank last week after attempts had failed to move the vessel before the monsoonal rains.

Efforts are being made to remove the oil from the surface of the sea while the oil that has reached the shoreline is being removed by the authorities concerned.

According to reports the cargo vessel could only be salvaged in January when the seas were usually calmer. (SD)
