UNP parliamentarian P. Harrison said today the first duty performed by the police, after it was brought under the purview of a new ministry, was to hold a wedding ceremony for dogs. He said this was an example of Government attempts to make Sri Lanka a miracle of Asia.

“Soon after the news of Navi Pillay’s visit to Sri Lanka, the Police Department was brought under the purview of a new Ministry. The first duty performed by the police was to have a wedding ceremony for the canines and send them to Nuwara Eliya for their honeymoon at a time when even our youth find it difficult to do sobecause of Sri Lanka’s rapidly soaring cost of living. This is the miracle of Asia. We expect the police to act more reasonably after it was brought under a new ministry. We never expected it would be asection of the army because the Police Department is being handled by a retired Army Major General,” he said.

Mr. Harrison said it was neither the UNP nor its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who paved the way for Ms. Pillay’s visit here but it was Mahinda Rajapaksa who gave the opportunity for the international community to probe human right violations in Sri Lanka.

“It was Mahinda Rajapaksa who went to Geneva in 1988 and 1989 saying that human rights are being violated in Sri Lanka and requested them to carry out a probe and even asked the UN not to grant us any aid. It was since then that the international community began to investigate human right violations in our country”, he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)
