Cabinet should decide – JVP

The JVP today said that the Cabinet has to take a decision to suspend or withdraw the proposed Private Sector Pension Scheme Bill and the SLFP Central Committee, which is a political authority, has no authority to suspend the Bill.

Addressing a press conference, JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said, “We heard in the news that the SLFP Central Committee chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa resolved that the Bill be suspended.

The SLFP is a political authority. They cannot make decisions on behalf of the government. There is no validity in such decisions otherwise.”

He said that the bill was presented in Parliament after the Cabinet approval was given, and therefore, only the Cabinet could decide whether to suspend or withdraw it.

He however said that the ‘suspension’ of the Private Sector Pension Scheme Bill was in a way a victory for the private sector workers, but the struggle should be taken forward until it was scrapped. (Kelum Bandara)
