An organised group has cleared a vast area of more than 50 acres in the Somawathie National Park in Polonnaruwa, causing extensive environmental damage.

A senior official of the forest Conservation Department said they carried out a raid with the help of a Police team to arrest the individuals concerned, but the suspects had fled from the scene.

During the raid Police seized a bulldozer used by the suspects. (K.G. Karunaratne)
