Buddhika and Shiral suspended

The UNP today suspended Matara District MP Buddhika Patirane and Western Provincial Council Member Shiral Laktilake from the party’s membership on charges of violating the party’s constitution in their recent actions

These two members used to criticise the party leadership openly. They have been with co-deputy leader Sajith Premadasa agitating for a leadership change right from the beginning.

Issuing a statement, the UNP said that there were complaints against these two members that they did not support the party at the October 8 local government election, and instead, campaigned for independent groups in their respective areas.

The party said that General Secretary Tissa Attanayake requested these members in writing on September 28, 2009 and on October 5, 2011 to support the party after making public announcements, but they ignored it. (KB)
