Buddhadasa sues NFF media spokesman

Kaduwela Municipal Council Mayor G.H. Buddhadasa has filed a lawsuit against National Freedom Front (NFF) Spokesman Mohammad Muzammil claiming Rs.100 million as damages for allegedly making a defamatory statement on the Mayor on May 22, 2014.

In the lawsuit, Kaduwela Mayor had named NFF spokesman Mohammad Muzammil as the defendant.

Mr. Buddhadasa alleged that in a statement made by the NFF media spokesman on May 22 included defamatory remarks on him by portraying him as a politically immature politician who could not understand political proposals and policies suit to the country.

In his petition before District Court, Mr. Buddhadasa stated that the NFF Spokesman had made following remarks on him.

“There are two types of criticisms. Some are very fruitful but some are not meaningful. We do not think that meaningless criticism would bring benefits for the society or a person. The Pinguttarayas like Buddhadasa do not know about these proposals and policies and thereby he opted to talk different topics.”    
He stated that the concerned statement had given a wide publicity by an electronic media, print media and several websites.

He stated alleged defamatory statement had given a wrong impression to the general public that he had no political knowledge and political maturity as a politician.

He further stated that the defendant had made this statement with wrongful intention to defame or injure (Animus-Injuriandi) to him.  

Mr. Buddhadasa alleged that the concerned statement caused damage to his reputation and thereby he claimed a sum of Rs.100 million as damages.
