Briton drowns in Tangalle

A British national was drowned when he was swimming in the Seenimodara sea in Tangalle Saturday night, the police said.

The victim was identified as John Robert Smith from the UK who was 60 years old at the time of his death, police media spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said.

Police said that he had a habit of going for a swim in the night. He had left the hotel at around 9.00 p.m. on Saturday and according to eyewitnesses had drowned at around 9.40 p.m.

The body was found by navy divers in the Mawella sea area and was handed over to the Tangalle Police this morning.

He was holidaying in the island and was staying at a hotel in Seenimodara. The Tangalle police are further investigating.(SD)
