Bribery suspect granted bail illegally: Commission

A complaint was made today to the Colombo Chief Magistrate alleging that the Akkaraipattu Magistrate had illegally released a suspect on bail despite objections raised by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, officials said.

The suspect is the officer in charge of the Akkaraipattu Bus Terminal and had solicited and accepted Rs.250 from bus driver to sign the monthly running sheet.

Only the Colombo Chief Magistrate and the High Court are empowered to grant bail to suspects on bribery charges, officers said.

Colombo Chief Magistrate cancelled the bail on the suspect and remanded him till June 6. (T. Farook Thajudeen)
