Bribery Comm. allegedly split into factions

The Bribery Commission appears to have split into two factions following the resignation of one commissioner, informed sources said.

Though some officials hold the view that the commission’s functions can be carried out satisfactorily despite the resignation of the commissioner, another set of officials say otherwise.

Following the enactment of the 19th Amendment, the vacancy left by the resignation can only be filled by the Constitutional Council (CC). It is learnt that it will take another two weeks to establish the Council. Till then the position will remain vacant -- affecting the commission’s activities.

According to legal experts, cases cannot be filed in a court of law by the Bribery Commission until all the vacancies are filled. (Sujith Hewajulige)
