Bread for rice

The move to raise the price of a loaf of bread is an attempt by the government to encourage people to switch to eating rice so as to assist the local paddy industry, trade unions alleged.

The National Trade Union Centre, in a press release today, said that the government had been urging the masses to switch to eating more rice and less bread and the move to raise the price of bread could be seen as an attempt to facilitate this exercise.

Chairman of the National Trade Union Centre K. D. Lalkantha said that if as claimed the price of bread was increased as a result of the rise in the cost of wheat flour then other bakery products will also see a price hike very soon. (Daily Mirror online)
