BoI won’t register any more private schools

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardene today told Parliament that the Board of Investment (BoI) had stopped the registration of any private schools hereafter.

The minister was responding to United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Akila Virage Kariyawasam who raised this matter in the House during the committee stage of the budget debate on the Education Ministry.

“The BoI will not entertain any request for registration of private schools,” he said.

Mr. Kariyawasam who started the debate on behalf of the opposition said there were serious questions about the quality of education being offered at some private and international schools.

“A friend of mine is an English graduate. She was offered an appointment to teach advanced level science subjects at an international school. She declined saying science is not her academic discipline. The school authorities had then asked her to explain the prescribed textbooks to students,” he said.
