Alejandro Inarritu and his dark comedy ‘Birdman’ bagged four awards - best director, best picture, cinematography and original screenplay - out of nine nominations at the 87th Annual Academy Awards held in Los Angeles on Sunday evening.

"A script that started with a middle aged man, cross legged, can't go anywhere, and we are here. I don't know how it happened. But it happened. Anyway, I just really want to thank everybody," Inarritu says, seeming stunned to be back on stage.

He also dedicated the award to fellow Mexicans, both at home and in the United States.
