The main opposition United National Party (UNP) said it had formed a committee to draft a bill to be presented in parliament to ensure that Sarath Fonseka’s civic rights and military honors were restored and all penalties against him completely revoked.

During Monday’s Working Committee meeting the UNP unanimously decided to set up a committee comprising lawyers Wijeydasa Rajapaksa, Lakshman Kiriella and Ajith P. Perera to prepare the draft bill.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the bill would be presented as soon as possible and hoped that the government would support the UNP’s efforts.

“If the government supports the bill we will know whether its intention to free Sarath Fonseka is genuine,” Mr. Attanayake said.

At today’s media conference Mr. Attanayake extended an open invitation to Mr. Fonseka asking him to join hands with the UNP. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
