The railway security authority informed that they had increased the fine on ticket-less travel to Rs 2,500. The fine is intended to create awareness among the commuters to purchase a ticket at normal rates and avoid paying a fine of Rs 2,500.

The railway department hopes to increase its revenues with the proposed fine hike.

Earlier, a commuter traveling in the third class compartment without a ticket had to pay a fine of Rs. 900, a second class compartment commuter Rs. 1,100 and a first class commuter Rs. 1,650. Now with this increase a passenger traveling in a higher class holding a low class ticket would be fined Rs 2,500 plus double the difference in fares of the upper class. In addition damages to railway crossings involve a fine of Rs 25,000, the railway security authority said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
